CHADWELL St Mary A.B.C boxers Jake Wise and Michael Maloney were both selected from boxing clubs in Essex to represent our county in a boxing tournament against the boxing clubs in New York.
Team leader Barry Bowers of (Belhus Park A.B.C) alongside county coach Glen Dainty of (Canvey A.B.C) as well as Essex support coaches and judges Les Cooke of (Billericay A.B.C) Terry Dainty of (Canvey A.B.C) and Chris Alvin of (Southend A.B.C) travelled out to New York from Heathrow airport on the 7th September with a squad of 21 boxers from thirteen different clubs in Essex.
First to box at The Worldwide Boxing Gym in the Bronx on Friday 10th September was Chadwell St Mary boxer Jake “BRAINZ” Wise who set the standard for the rest of the competition.
Jake Wise out pointed V.Vasques from The Worldwide Gym and Les Cooke (Billericay coach) stated “The boxing was top class and Jake Wise boxed out of his skin”.
Only four bouts went ahead on the first night of boxing and 15 year old Schoolboy and Three Nations Champion Michael Maloney’s opponent did not show. It was hopeful that he would be matched alongside the other Essex boxers who would be fighting on the Saturday night at the famous B.B. Kings in Time Square. Once again Maloneys second opponent did not show.
Essex took 21 boxers and 16 managed to box, the overall score was 8/8 which was a very good result considering they were boxing on American soil. The American clubs do not pre-match for their shows so both nights it was hit and miss as to who would be boxing and when.
Jake and Michael’s trainer Scot Johnston was over the moon with the results and said that they had both shown great maturity in travelling to New York with the Essex squad and making yet another statement for “Chadwell St Mary A.B.C.”
