THURROCK councillors called for a borough wide booze ban to stem the growing tide of anti-social behaviour in the borough.
The agreement followed a motion submitted by shadow deputy leader and Ockendon councillor Amanda Arnold (Cons) where she called for the police and council to investigate the need for an alcohol free zone in South Ockendon.
The councillor detailed (with visual aids) the effects alcohol had in her ward.
Councillor for East Tilbury, John Purkiss called for the ban to stretch further than Ockendon.
He said: “This is something that should stretch throughout the borough. There is no reason for people to wander around with cans of booze.”
Councillors from Aveley to Corringham backed the motion detailing how drinking in public had affected their wards.
Who is going to enforce this – the existing containment area in Grays is not a success as it simply moved people on towards the Beach or people openly flaunted the not very visible signs. A non started unless you make visible enfocement efforts.
