Thurrock Council chief executive Graham Farrant has rebutted a claim that nearly 300 jobs are to go from the council.
He was speaking in response to the statement from the GMB union, claiming “Thurrock Council can expect to see 292 jobs go in the light of the government’s announcement” on council spending.
Mr Farrant said: “While it is true we have over 250 staff currently ‘at risk’ as part of the council’s budget plans, a ‘matching panel’ has been set up to identify job opportunities arising from staff turnover, retirements and so on.
“The actual number of posts being deleted from the council as part of the 2011/12 budget setting process is yet to be agreed, but will almost certainly be below one hundred.”
