Packed domestic violence courts after Christmas

GRAYS magistrates court saw dozens of cases at its specialist domestic violence courts yesterday (Wednesday).

1. A GRAYS man pled guilty to assaulting his former girlfriend as she and her friend walked home.

Ben Davis, 25, Whitmore Gardens, Grays attacked Sarah Taylor and her friend Kerry Martin as they walked home on Blackshots Lane last August.

The court heard that after Davis initially assaulted Ms Taylor. She rang 999 and pleaded with the controller: “He’ll kill me”.

She was left with a swollen eye.

Davis was fined £150 and made subject to a two year supervision order.

2. A PURFLEET man pled guilty to assaulting his former partner after a visit to the cinema led to violence.

Kassim Toluwaleke Makanjuola, 28 agreed for his former partner, Alison Jex to visit their daughter. They went to the cinema at Lakeside. Ms Jex stayed over, sleeping on the sofa.

The court heard that next day, Makanjuola wanted to got to the council offices to apply for a two bedroomed flat. He was angered that Ms Jex was “dragging her heels” in the house. He became angry, grabbed her by the arm and forcibly removed her from the home.

Sentencing was deferred for further reports.

3. A WOMAN has denied beating her husband on Christmas Day in a dispute over their divorce.

Mary Olaiyi, 34, denied assaulting her husband Suleimon Ore at their house in Caspian Close in Purfleet.

A trial date was set for March 23rd.
