Womens FA Cup 3rd Round
Bill Robinson reports from Ship Lane……..
It was a hard fought midfield battle with very few chances being created by either side but the one real chance created by Gemma Shepherd was converted by Carly Roache and sees the hammers progress into the 4th round draw at the FA on Monday morning.
Still fresh in their memory was the league defeat inflicted by Brighton back in November and once again Brighton put out a strong eleven and made life difficult for the hammers.
West Ham dominated the possession throughout the first half and had the advantage of the strong wind at their backs but had to wait until the forty second minute before they took the lead.
The move started wide on the right with Gemma Shepherd, with two defenders around her she beat one before hitting a low drive across the six yard box where Carly Roache was running in to side foot home from four yards.
Brighton came out in the second have looking to find a way through the hammers back four but centre backs Rosey Sullivan and Danica Revell where more than a match for the Brighton strikers and despite a few scares restricted them to a few long range efforts that keeper Toni-Anne Wayne dealt with easily.
Nina Downham and Becky Merritt looked dangerous on the break with Emma Thomas speeding down the right flank but they just could not get the goal that would have sealed the win.
A few nail biting minutes towards the end but West Ham looked comfortable as the progressed into the next round.
Back to League action next Sunday with a home game at Ship Lane against Gillingham Ladies kick off 2:00pm.
