£50k Mercedes in hit and run theft in Purfleet

Police are asking for the public’s help to identify a man they wish to speak to in connection with the theft of a £50,000 car at Deep Wharf, Purfleet

At 11.30am on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 a suspect took a Mercedes Benz C Class from a depot after the keys were left insecure.

As the vehicle was being driven away it struck a man, aged in his 50s, causing bruising to his hip.

The car was later found abandoned the same day in Gloucester Avenue, East Tilbury, with £2,000 damage.

Investigating officer, Pc Gavin Lawes, said: “Thankfully, the man who was struck by the car was uninjured apart from some bruises, but it clearly could have turned out very differently.

“The CCTV images are fairly clear and if you think you know who it is, please pick up the phone and call police or Crimestoppers.”

The suspect is described as a white man, of stocky build, wearing a black woolly hat, dark jumper and high visibility vest.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Pc Lawes at Grays police station on 0300 333 4444 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
