Strong reaction to road safety survey on Southend Road

There have been a number of accidents and near-misses on Southend Road in Stanford-le-Hope going back several years, and this is an ongoing matter of public concern. Councillors have tried to get action before, but so far little has been achieved.

The local Conservative team are convinced that something needs to be done to improve safety along Southend Road, and have launched a consultation survey to ask residents to provide evidence of the incidents they have witnessed and suggestions for what might be done about it. This is not a party political issue, and the cabinet member for transport has already said that he will listen seriously to whatever findings come out.

Cllr Phil Anderson says: “We launched our survey two weeks ago, and we have had an excellent response. Over 10% of households surveyed have now sent in an reply, and many of these give detailed information and suggestions.

We know that this issue affects more than those who live on or near Southend Road. Many motorists and cyclists users use the road daily, pedestrians have to cross it, and there are several primary schools in the area.

Because of this, we have decided to extend the consultation by providing an online version of the survey that anyone can fill in.

You can find a link to it at It will only take a couple of minutes, and it could help to prevent another serious accident.”
