East Thurrock: Still top as the big run-in begins

EAST THURROCK didn’t play yesterday. They were scheduled to play Leyton who have dropped out of the league. Their nearest rivals, Needham Market needed to win to regain the top spot but the Suffolk side could only draw against lowly Ilford.

Promotion nerves have really got to Needham but now the task is clear for John Coventry’s men. Keep you nerve, win your games and the championship can be yours.

Needham may now have to look at the momentum of their season. They are sure to make the play offs but teams such as Brentwood and Harlow seem to have had a new lease of life.

So while Market look like that marathon runner who, having led for a long time is swallowed up by the pack. Rocks boss John Coventry a veteran marathon runner himself will appreciate the analogy. East Thurrock now have to be the leading runner with their eyes fixed on the road in front as they go in search of gold.

Rocks have five away games to come but the challenge will be at home when they face Needham and Brentwood on consecutive Saturdays next month.

There was heartache for Rocks in the last two seasons. Anyone who knows Covo and the team will wish them all the best.
