Foal left orphaned despite efforts of firefighters

FIREFIGHTERS were called to assist in the rescue of a horse in a ditch in water near to the Tilbury Fort. The animal had just given birth to a foal and was too weak to haul herself free.

Crews were sent to the scene to assist its owner and a vet in bringing the dame to safety. Along with crews from Orsett and Grays, ECFRS sent its new specialist animal rescue team from South Woodham Ferrers to the incident.

The animal was released by 11:57 hrs but sadly had to be destroyed by the vet, who will now care for the foal until it can be moved to a safe place.
