Tories pledge to launch enquiry into Orsett fire

SENIOR Tory councillors have pledged to set up an enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fire at the Orsett quarry.

The fire has now been burning for three weeks. Although fire crews have stood down, the fire still smoulders away and has caused a great deal of inconvenience to residents.

The smoke can be seen from Kent and twenty miles away on the M25.

Closer to home, many residents have had to keep their doors and windows shut for weeks.

Orsett councillor Mike Revell said: “This fire has caused great consternation and distress to our residents. I thank all that have helped to put it out but we will be looking into all the circumstances surrounding the fire.”

Cllr Revell’s comments were echoed by leader of the council, cllr John Kent. He said: “Although we are not a lead partner we are committed to doing all we can to help establish the full circumstances surrounding the fire and to also ensure that such an incident does not happen again.
