Thurrock 1 Welling United 2 Blue Square Bet South Bill Robinson reports from Ship Lane…… A twenty minute spell mid way through the match saw Thurrock go from 1 nil up to 4-1 down when they were just beginning to look likely of holding back table toppers Welling. Thurrock took the lead in the 12th minute when captain Dean Cracknell got onto the end of a low cross from the left and side footed home from 12 yards beating the keeper to his left. Thurrock were absorbing everything that Welling could throw at them, with constant corners and long crosses causing great anxiety in the Thurrock box. Welling eventually got back on level terms in the 40th minute when the speedy full back Adam Gemiji mistimed a tackle and caught the left foot of Andy Pugh giving the Referee no doubt in awarding a penalty that was duly converted by Lee Clarke. Two minutes later Welling went in front, a fierce free kick driven in hard into the box saw the ball deflect off of Joe Bruce and into the back of his own goal. HT 1-2 Lee Boylan came on as sub at the start of the second half replacing Paul Terry giving Thurrock another option. Unfortunately the frenetic play from Thurrock looked promising but paid no dividends and on 54 minutes Welling added a third from Loick Piers and on 61 minutes a fourth from Andy Pugh. Welling eased of the gas and took control of the game and played out the rest of time without many chances being created by either side. Thurrock now with just one point from 18 are firmly rooted at the bottom of the division with no easy games this season its going to be a long and tough season ahead.
