THE RECENT public consultation at Lakeside Shopping Centre on the centre’s proposed new development showed overwhelming support for the proposed extension.
87% of those who filled in consultation postcards at the public exhibition from Thursday 20th – Saturday 22nd October said that they supported Lakeside’s proposals for new retail and leisure facilities. Furthermore, 82% of people polled were in favour of the plans for a new transport hub linking bus services and Chafford Hundred rail station.
Paul Lancaster, General Manager of Lakeside Shopping Centre, said: “I’m very pleased to see that the vast majority of our shoppers support our plans to make Lakeside even better. Since we opened back in 1990, we have always evolved and changed to meet the needs of our customers and retailers. This exciting new development is the next phase in our evolution.”
The proposals for the extension of Lakeside includes 30-40 new shops, including new flagship stores, an external street and public space and an integrated transport hub linking bus and rail services.
Significant benefits of the proposal include:
· 1,000 construction jobs; 2,500 jobs once the development is complete and indirect support for a further 700 jobs in the area through wage and supplier spending
· Improvements in public transport infrastructure
· Meeting the development aspirations of Thurrock Borough Council
Capital Shopping Centres will submit an outline planning application for the new development later this year.
