Thurrock artist exhibits new work in east London

ESTABLISHED Thurrock photographer Antonisia Schroder is getting set to unveil her latest project, entitled Million Dollar Heart, at the University of East London in the Docklands.

The Brazilian-born artist, who enjoyed successful exhibitions in Grays last year with ‘Thurrock Life in Focus’ and in central London earlier this year, is exhibiting alongside several other artists at an exhibition called My Crappy City or Settee. She is also collaborating with a group of other Thurrock artists on a project related to the 2012 Olympics next year.

Million Dollar Heart focuses on the tragic world of the homeless of east London and tells the story of the danger and issues that face them day to day, while showing their personal and human side. She took the pictures at various locations in the East End and developed a relationship and rapport during the project which has allowed her pictures to become very intimate and to tell a story.

The exhibition runs at the AVA Gallery at the University of East London (Docklands Campus) in University Way, Docklands (nearest station Cyprus DLR) on 8 and 9 December 2011 (10am – 5pm). There will be an opportunity to make a donation to the Canning Town Soup Kitchen.

Antonisia said: “This project is my most personal one yet. I wanted to convey the strong emotions that these homeless people feel day to day and to create this I put myself in their shoes and got to know them.

“It is the only way that you are ever going to really achieve the level of intimacy that you want in your photographs. I hope all those who visit can enjoy it, and will be able to make a small donation to make the lives of these people just a little brighter.”

Note to editors: Press are invited to attend the private view between 6 and 9pm on Wednesday 7 December 2011.
