Fightback is on as Thurrock hold run-away leaders to battling draw

Thurrock 1 v 1 Woking

Blue Square Bet South

Bill Robinson reports from Ship Lane…..

Thurrock produced their best performance of the season in a Top v Bottom clash, but it was difficult to see who was top as Thurrock outplayed the visitors for the greater part of the match.

It was Jamie Guy that put Thurrock in front on 25 minutes, finishing off a well worked move which started deep in the Thurrock half. The ball was passed around in midfield by Paul Terry and Stuart Thurgood before Nathan Ashton went on a run down the left flank, his cross was deflected but fell into the path of Jamie Guy who side footed with power past the keeper into the back of the net.

Thurrock were unlucky not to have scored early when Paul Terry cleverly lobbed the defence only to see his effort strike the bar.

Then on 35 minutes Thurrock won a free kick deep into the Woking half wide on the right. Ahmed Deen took the kick, he set in a curling deep cross that was destined for the top corner until keeper ………finger tipped the ball onto the bar.

HT 1-0

Woking were obviously stunned by the unexpected Thurrock performance came out in the second half looking to assert there mark on the game.

Thurrock did at times appear to play to deep and Woking began to look dangerous in attack. They won too many free kicks and corners, putting pressure on the Thurrock defence, but the new look back four looked more than capable to sustain the visitors.

Thurrock under pressure had a few breakaway attacks and on one occasion could have sealed a win when Ahmed Deen was 25 yards out from goal with just the advancing keeper to beat, but his lob shot was to high and sailed over the bar.

Woking came close when they hit the woodwork and they finally got their reward in the 75th minute when a corner kick was not cleared and the ball came back into the Thurrock’s defence allowing Elvis Hammond to spectacularly fire an overhead kick into the far corner of the net.

Thurrock looked comfortable in the remaining minutes as both teams fought to ensure that they shared the points.
