Aveley battle but go down fighting at Hastings

Ryman Premier

Hastings United 2 v 1 Aveley

ANOTHER game and another case of close but no cigar for the Millermen as they lost 2-1 away at Hastings United.

A Kenny Pogue’s 48th minute strike proved the difference between two teams who both finished the fixture with 10 men.

Hastings opened the scoring on 28 minutes through Lee Carey’s superbly struck free kick which found the top corner of Aveley’s net.

Aveley got back into the game when a Hastings error saw keeper Matt Armstrong-Ford who completely misjudged a deep cross from Paul Shave and allowed the ball to sail over his head for the equaliser.

But Aveley just couldn’t stay in touch and Pogue added a second just before half time when Jack Dixon’s cross was met by Danny Ellis whose clever back flick was thumped home by Pogue.

Hastings had more chances in the second half with Jordan Woodley and Ben Davisson both going close.

The game finished on an unsavoury note when Aveley substitute Abs Thompson and Jordan Woodley sent off for fighting.

The result leaves Aveley seven points from safety. There are still eighteen games left but there is very little to suggest that the Millermen won’t be playing in the Ryman Div One North next season.
