Reduce costs the green way

EVER increasing fuel and utility bills and other costs are eating away at business profits, but there are ways to reduce running costs.

THE LOW Carbon Business Programme together with the Green Business Forum has already engaged with over 130 Thurrock-based businesses, completed energy audits in 36, and approved more than £160,000 worth of grants for cost-saving projects.

The programme is part of the government’s package of publicly funded business support designed to help companies start and grow, and is available until December 2012.

One Thurrock firm to take advantage of what is on offer is the Stanford-le-Hope based funeral directors LE Brand and Sons. They were refurbishing their building in the High Street, and started by insulating the walls and loft to reduce their energy demand.

Even though they need air conditioning in their chapel of rest, the system will use less energy because the building is more thermally efficient. The insulation is part of a larger project which will save them over £2,000 a year.

Another is 3 Way Cleaning from Grays. They have cut costs by approximately £1,000 a year by getting rid of the many printers they had and switching to a single, efficient one. They now use less paper and toner cartridges.

The team also suggest businesses scrutinise all utility bills, checking the units used as well as the cost. Watching what you actually use can help identify anomalies or highlight costs of new equipment or practices.
