Fears over son wounded in Afghanistan caused Purfleet man to drink and drive

A PURFLEET MAN’S anxiety over his son after hearing he had been injured in battle was the cause of his drinking and driving a court heard.

Tony Johnson aka Tony Turner, 50, River Court, Purfleet told Basildon magistrates court that after hearing the news that his son had been shot in the leg in Afghanistan, he drove to the Royal Hotel in Purfleet.

Whilst driving home on London Road, Purfleet, police officers witnessed him weaving across the road. He was stopped, breathalysed and found to be over the limit.

Turner pleaded guilty. He was banned from driving for seventeen months.
