LOCAL councillors dropped in to Lakeside to read some of their favourite children’s stories to delighted youngsters as part of Lakeside’s FREE half term family entertainment.

Councillor Diana Hale, Councillor Cathy Kent and Councillor Angie Gaywood each took a turn to read stories to children in storytelling sessions held in Lakeside’s Monster Garden by Debenhams on Level 1.

Enraptured children and tots were treated to ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ by A.A.Milne, ‘The Goblin in the Train’ by Enid Blyton and ‘The Lamb Who Came For Dinner’ by Steve Smallman and Joelle Driedemy – stories which were all personally chosen by the special guest readers themselves.

The storytelling sessions were part of Lakeside’s FREE half term fun and games for families which included monster making and the chance to meet Froggle (one of the Little Lake Monsters).

Councillors Gaywood, Hale and Kent said “As members of the Council’s Children’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee, we were really thrilled at being invited to read to local children at the half term Monsters event at Lakeside and to show our support for the value of reading to children from such a young age. We would like to thank Lakeside once again for putting on free family activities, as it really makes a difference when many parents have less to spend.”

Sophie Scott, Marketing Manager at Lakeside comments, “We were delighted that Councillors Gaywood, Hale and Kent accepted our invitation to read their favourite stories to our young shoppers. The children were absolutely enthralled by the stories that they chose and thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling session led by these obviously practised professionals!”

The free activities take place every day between 11am and 5pm and continue until Friday 17th February. The storytelling sessions will take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm every day. Lakeside will be offering free family entertainment during every school holiday this year.

  1. Please could someone inform me if there are any Tories or independents on the said mentioned committee, I do not mean to turn things political but one would of thought all of the committee would of been invited, it just seems such a shame that only 3 from the same party turned up. After all it would of been a terrific way to show children people can work side by side. Of course it could of been that it was for children & they are not eligible to vote?
