Dear Editor,

When was the last time you stopped what you were doing and simply played?

On 11 June, on the International Day of Play, Starlight is inviting your readers to take part in The Big Play. Whether at work, school, home or in their local community, people of all ages are being encouraged to pause for a few moments during their day and join in a simple game of “Simon Says”.

Research consistently shows that play supports our mental, emotional and physical health, helping us feel happier, less stressed and more connected to others.

For seriously ill children, play is even more important. Starlight helps children in hospitals and healthcare settings experience the joy and comfort of play during treatment, improving both their healthcare experience and their wellbeing – reducing trauma.

The Big Play is a reminder that play isn’t just for children – it’s something all of us can benefit from, no matter our age, stage or position in life.

Together, we can create a moment of joy that makes a real difference.

Sincerely,
Laura Walsh, Director or Play in Healthcare, Starlight
