WHEN a local man got interested in Travel Thurrock, it led to his daughter’s school looking into the project.

Johan de Beer was given a pedometer by Thurrock Council’s Travel Thurrock Personalised Journey Planning team when they visited him at home offering information and advice on alternative ways to make everyday journeys.

Mr de Beer gave the pedometer to his daughter who started to count the steps she took walking to Deneholm Primary School in Culford Road, Little Thurrock.

That started her classmates all asking if they could get a pedometer and get walking to school too – and on Friday, the council provided 30 pedometers for everyone in Class 5.

He and his family live in Ludlow Place, Grays, and he says he loves walking to school with his daughter and the pedometer just made the walk to school more fun – it is over 2,2000 steps to school

Deneholm Primary is also looking forward to a visit from the council’s road safety team who will be talking to all the pupils about pedestrian training and Kerbcraft where more pedometers will be given away to help encourage a safe and fun, walk to school.

The first 1,000 Thurrock residents to register online to receive email updates about Travel Thurrock can collect a free pedometer from their local library or from the Civic Offices in New Road.
