ANYONE who looks under the age of 25 will be asked for ID as Thurrock backs the new National Challenge 25 campaign.

Launched in Grays town centre on Thursday (12 April) Challenge 25 is particularly aimed at giving businesses, which sell age-restricted goods, the information and support they need to ensure they don’t break the law.

Thursday’s event also reminded young people that they will be asked for ID if they are buying items like alcohol and cigarettes.

Partners attending the launch included Thurrock Council officers from Trading Standards, Licensing and Community Protection alongside Essex Police and Network – the young people’s drug and alcohol advisory service.

Other work focusing on underage drinking includes undercover multi-agency operations looking at proxy sales – where adults buy age restricted products, particularly alcohol for those under age; test purchasing and patrols in known hotspot areas.

Support for businesses is also provided through training schemes around the sale of age-restricted goods. The next training course is on 18 May. Businesses should contact Thurrock Trading Standards on 01375 652310 to book or for more information.
