Grays Ath 0 v 3 Enfield Town
GRAYS ATHLETIC’S ten match unbeaten run came to an end as they were outclassed by a very impressive Enfield Town 3-0 at Rookery Hill.
A weakened Grays Ath had rested the whole spine of the team as Grant Gordon and Harry Agombar were on the bench and James Bunn rested.
In sodden conditions, Grays started brightly with Joe Sweeney looking dynamic early on up front.
You got the sense early on that Enfield had one eye on the play-offs.
In the 11th minute, Brian Hammatt was booked for a very late tackle on Kenny Beaney.
Grays were peppering the Enfield box. Joe Sweeney was free at the far post but took the ball down when he should have hit it first time.
Keeper Noel Imber did well to turn over the bar a cross from Lee Flynn. Player of the year, Jaoa Carlos fired the corner across but Danny Bunce pushed the ball into the side netting.
Enfield should have scored after a dreadful Tony Tucker clearance went straight to Liam Hope but the keeper redeemed himself by smothering the chance away for a corner.
Enfield started to assert themselves. Players such as Osei, Hall and Wallace showed why they are still promotion favourites.
The rain got worse. Soon players would be playing the mouthorgan and writing letters home.
Grays chances were becoming few and far between. Joaa Carlos repeated Joe Sweeney’s earlier mistake of taking a touch. Hakan will need his players to be braver in the play-off.
A horribly mis-timed challenge by Bradley Thomas was penalised by a yellow.
Grays should have scored from the restart. Joe Sweeney broke free but with just the keeper to beat he hit the ball wildly over the bar.
In the 53rd minute, Enfield took the lead when Bradley Thomas handled in the area in a goalmouth melee. Liam Hope scored from the spot.
Grays came back. Imber punched away a good shot from Danny Bunce.
Enfield continued to demonstrate their class. Tony Tucker did very well to turn over a chip from Rudi Hall.
But they could not resist sub Tyler Campbell who ran onto a through ball to slide the ball home and then Walid Matata got in on the fun to make it 3-0.
