State Cinema for sale

ONE OF Thurrock’s much-loved landmarks is up for sale.

The State Cinema in George Street, Grays has been closed for several years. Its future has been the subject of much concern and debate.

Photographs of the listed building have shown the cinema as being in a somewhat dilapidated state.

Earlier this year, the owners, TSP properties were granted planning permission by the (now defunct) Development Corporation.

The property is described as: “The property comprises of a 2,200 seat cinema that was constructed in 1938. The property was designed by Frederick Chancellor and is constructed of brown brick beneath a series of predominantly flat roofs.

“The principal entrance to the cinema is from George Street with the stage “get-in” situated at the western elevation. Internally, the property is in a largely original condition and comprises of a reception hall with ground floor bar, Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s WC’s, stores and administrative offices. Additionally there are two stand alone retail units fronting George Street.

“At first floor level, a restaurant, kitchen, WC’s and stores are provided with the second and third floors comprising of stores, WC’s and a projector room. The main auditorium accommodates approximately 2,200 persons with 1,400 seats in the stalls and 800 within the circle.”

  1. Lets just hope that it survives in its present form, and does’nt get burnt down!
It would be fantastic to see it refurbished back to its original condition.

  2. Sadly jnw I believe a “Fire” maybe the only way the State Cinema will be rejuvenated. It has been a Borough disgrace for this building to be left rotting for so long. Unfortunately inaction does some up the regeneration agenda over the last 30 years.

  3. Sorry sum up not some up. Wetherspoons for the State with state of the Art Film equipment blended into an Art Deco setting. Contact all Film Lovers world wide ask for ideas and do it now! Regenerate now in time for the economic pickup.
