WITH 13 million people living below the poverty line in the UK, a new charity called Thurrock foodbank is striving to provide emergency food to local people in crisis. Lakeside Shopping Centre has purchased £500 worth of equipment and supplies for Thurrock foodbank to help get the charity up and running.

Part of a national network, Thurrock foodbank will provide a minimum of 3 days worth of emergency food to those in need. The equipment and supplies from Lakeside, provided through its Heart of the Community fund, will help the foodbank team ensure no-one in the local area goes hungry.

Victoria Windus, Thurrock foodbank’s Project Manager, said, “Receiving the Lakeside Heart of the Community grant was a real encouragement for Thurrock foodbank and has been a very practical help towards our start-up costs. The response from Thurrock residents at our food collections has been fantastic and we look forward to opening the foodbank later this summer to help individuals and families in crisis across the borough.”

Sophie Scott, Marketing Manager at Lakeside, comments: “The Thurrock foodbank will provide a vital service to members of our local community so it’s a perfect fit for our Heart of the Community campaign. Getting involved at this early stage in the charity’s development has meant we’re able to make a real difference and help this group of individuals get the foodbank up and running.”

Lakeside’s Heart of the Community campaign supports two local causes every month with £500 donations. Members of the community are invited to nominate worthy charities and local groups that could benefit from a donation.
