Grays Ath 4 v 1 West Ham X1

GRAYS ATH got their pre-season underway in fine style with a 4-1 victory against a West Ham X1.

It was the first game at their new ground in the West Ham training facility at Rush Green in Romford.

West Ham chairman David Sullivan opened the ground before the teams took to the pitch.

A foul by Lee Flynn in the third minute gave West Ham a free kick from which Blues keeper, Lamar Johnson made a fine save, diving low to his right.

Grays opened the scoring in the 7th minute. Winger Luke Marshall broke into space on the right and slipped it across to Jack West to tap in from close range.

The Hammers played a patient game as they stroked the ball around the near perfect surface.

Debutant Leon Lalite was slow to start in midfield, making a number of unforced errors.

Frederick Piquionne was a class apart upfront. In the 19th minute Grays showed him too much respect, giving him time to turn and shoot.

Jack West dug out another chance in the 22nd minute. One of Boss Hakans main challenges is to find a striker who will score a minimum of twenty goals this season.

Keeper Johnson looked very reliable.

In the 28th minute, Lee Flynn took up where he left off with a great free kick from just outside the box which put the Blues 2-0 up.

A Matthias Fanimo clearance off the line prevented West Ham from going further behind.

A third goal for Grays in the 43rd minute made a fine first half as Jaoa Carlos headed in easily from close range. Again it was the assertive West who had made things difficult the keeper.

James Bunn came on for Jack West as the second half began but it was keeper Lamar Johnson whom again looked sharp with a point blank save.

The heavens opened (well fancy that!) as West Ham dominated possession but could not get past Johnson.

Craig Pope made it 4-0 with a near post header from a Carlos corner in the 60th minute.

More Grays subs came on but the Blues momentum continued. Tyrone Scarlett certainly looked swift and Brian Moses, tall….

Moshni got a goal back for West Ham in the 65th minute.

The game petered out with manager Hakan plenty to mull over.
