Ryman Premier League
Thurrock 1 Wingate & Finchley 2
Bill Robinson reports from Ship Lane……..
If you don’t score you won’t win perhaps sums up Thurrock performance
here today.
Still needing points as well as a confidence boost the visit of
Wingate & Finchley provided an opportunity for both.
Danger man Leon Smith should have opened the scoring in the fourth
minute when a thro pass from Sam Berry pieced the Thurrock back four
but the ball became entangled in a number of legs and Smith finally
toe pocked the ball inches wide of the post with the keeper looking
on.
Thurrock took the lead in the 9th minute thanks to an unfortunate
error by Mark Waterstone, as he attempted to clear from inside the six
yard box the ball was driven straight into his own goal.
HT 1-0
The second half started much as the first had finished with Wingate &
Finchley pushing Thurrock into deep defensive positions.
Leon Smith had looked dangerous all game and on 54 minutes he was put
clear with another penetrating through ball, this time keeper Viner
pulled off a good save with his outstretched legs.
But just four minutes later with a similar move Smith took the ball
into the penalty area and slid the ball home through the advancing
keeper’s legs.
Wingate & Finchley gained more momentum from their equaliser and took
full advantage of the space Thurrock were allowing them in midfield.
When Anderson Pinto picked up the ball around the half way line he
moved unchallenged towards the edge of the box and fired home a fine
shot to put the visitors in front.
Lots of Huff and Puff from Thurrock in front of the Wingate goal never
came to much and they never troubled the keeper into making any saves.
Disappointing result and performance, next week Thurrock start out on
their FA Cup campaign when they visit Basildon United.
