West Tilbury WI: November Report

West Tilbury WI November 2012

President Gillian Morris is to continue as the president of West Tilbury WI in line with the new rules from the NFWI all presidents are to remain in office until April. Three new members we welcomed Joanne Phillips, June Adams and Lorna Jones.

Joy Ridgewell read out a report of the WI County General Meeting held at The Civic Hall in October. A collection was made for St Luke’s Hospice.

The Christmas meal will be on 27th November this year and there will be an invitation only WI Party meeting in December.

Our speaker this month was Ann Hardy who gave her very interesting talk entitled

All Aboard for Santa’s Grotto. Ann gave members an insight of the origins of the various aspects on all that we have and do at Christmas time.

Mince Pies originally had meat and spices until a sweeter version was introduced The first traditional meat for our dinner was not Turkey but Peacock or Swan served with the meat first cooked then recovered with its skin and feathers, Christmas Pudding was introduced in Victorian times but was banned when Oliver Cromwell reigned. The Christmas cake had letters on either side to denote what piece was served to either men or women ‘Wassail’ an apple wine laced with spices was usually served to accompany the cake. Holly and Mistletoe detect good and evil.

Ann went on to demonstrate on the Pantomime with a variety of hats and her magic wand with her audience giving their suitable responses. Everyone enjoyed their evening of fun to put us in mind of the festivities to come.

The Competition: Three Mince Pies was won by Iris Crane

Raffle: Joy Ridgewell& Joanne Phillips won the prizes

Next meeting: At West Tilbury Village Hall in January 2013

Visitors are welcome.
