Heavy fine for overweight lorry

MAGISTRATES issued fines and costs totalling more than £4,700 for an overweight lorry stopped and checked during a Thurrock Council operation.

Basildon Magistrates Court heard the lorry owned by Kent based freight company Alberti and Santi UK Ltd, was stopped as part of weight checks being carried out in April this year by Thurrock Trading Standards. The vehicle was found to be 2,450kg over its permitted weight.

In court on November 1 the company pleaded guilty to four cases of using a vehicle which had exceeded its permitted weight on the highway. Taking the early guilty plea into account the magistrates reduced the £1,500 fine for each offence to £1,000. He also ordered the company to pay £692 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. The driver of the lorry was given a caution.

Thurrock Council Portfolio Holder for Public Protection Councillor Angie Gaywood said: “We work with colleagues from VOSA to carry out these checks to ensure vehicles travelling on Thurrock roads are safe. With so many major routes we are committed to keeping them safe for our communities. There is never an excuse to flout regulations which are imposed for the safety of drivers and other road users.”

Joint working with VOSA, checking weights and road worthiness, is just one example of partnership operations to ensure the safety of vehicles and the roads. Operations are also carried out with Essex Police in particularly, to check road tax and insurance while council officers check business compliance.
