THE nightmare of illegal and rouge car clamping in Chafford has been highlighted by local councillor Tunde Ojetola in a council debate.
Local residents have regularly contacted Cllr Ojetola, and fellow ward councillor Charlie Key, with concerns about clampers operating without licenses or with insufficient signage. The Government has tightened the law to prevent such unfair treatment, and the councillors have called on the council to publicise these new rules to residents – which the council has now agreed to do.
Cllr Ojetola said “When I explain the new rules to residents, they are rightly pleased that they are protected from unscrupulous behaviour. Rogue clampers have caused a great deal of distress in Chafford, where many residents have had to pay exorbitant fees after parking in areas they didn’t even realise were patrolled by clampers.
“However, most residents are completely unaware of these new rules. That’s why I am pleased the council will be publicising them, so that residents can know their rights and not get fleeced. I would encourage anyone who is a victim of illegal clamping to contact the police before paying any release fees.”
