AS the Christmas festivities get underway revellers are reminded to keep safe and always use a licensed taxi.

There are two kinds of licensed taxis: Hackney Carriages and private hire vehicles. Hackney Carriages, which in Thurrock have yellow stickers and yellow licence plates, must use a meter for any journey and can be hailed in the street or hired from a taxi rank.

Private hire vehicles have prominent green stickers and plates and must be pre-booked and cannot be hailed on the street.

All licensed drivers must display a badge which shows their photograph and number.

When planning a night, ensure you:

Plan your journey and pre-book a taxi, particularly for your return journey.

Book taxis through a reputable company or used a licensed taxi from an official taxi rank.

Travel with a friend and let friends or family know where you are and what time you expect to be home.

Always sit in the back of the taxi.

Do not get in the taxi if you are at all unsure.

Travel with a friend or let someone know where you are going and when you are expected home.

Avoid danger spots – stick to busy well-lit streetsListen to your instincts – if you feel threatened head to a safe/busy place.

Take the same precautions wherever you are – even close to homeKeep the front of your home well-lit and in clear view.

Avoid broadcasting your ‘status’ online, particularly through social media sites, or mention that you live alone or will be alone.

Thurrock’s taxi ranks are generally outside railways stations and at Lakeside Shopping Centre near the Boardwalk.
