THE Mayor of Thurrock, Councillor Yash Gupta MBE, visited The Ockendon Academy today to see the progress being made by the Academy and the brand new Studio School which opened September 2012.
Meeting with Mrs King, Principal of The Ockendon Academy and Mr Berry, Director of Studio School, Cllr Gupta toured the school before observing a Studio School geography lesson which was taught using ‘project based’ learning, this is where students work in groups to research the theory and then apply the theory to a real situation.
Cllr Gupta was also joined by some students from the Studio School for lunch after which he commented, “I am extremely impressed with everything the Academy has done to raise aspirations of the local community.”
Meeting the Studio School students he added, “I am equally impressed at what they have managed to achieve and what they aspire to do. Let me take this opportunity to convey my thanks to the Principal, staff and students who welcomed me into their school today and for the hospitality which I was shown throughout my time spent with them.”
