Film: Top Tory demands more investment to fight benefit fraud

A LEADING Conservative councillor has called on Thurrock Council to look again at the amount of investment dedicated to fighting benefit fraud.

Deputy leader of the Thurrock Conservatives, cllr Rob Gledhill has made the call after the recent council budget setting.

With case after case of benefit fraud committed in the Thurrock area appearing in the press, cllr Gledhill believes this may be the time for more investment rather than less in the borough.

  1. The benefits fraud team are all bloddy racist anyway. Two Africans in the last week done at court for swindling £200k. Where’s all the white english scroungers. Get rid of the waste of space fraud team. We don’t want them catching people like this. Ordinary citizens here illegally just trying to get by while running businesses and having hundreds of thousands in false bank accounts. Bloody racist waste of time.

  2. Dear Cllr Gledhill – your Conservative Government has cut £154,242 this coming financial year from the money they give Thurrock council to administer housing benefit and investigate fraud. This is why Thurrock Council has had to cut £50,000 from their budget for fraud investigation.

It is your Governments cuts that have caused this.

Don’t castigate the Labour controlled council demanding they invest more tackling fraud when your Government has cut the money they give to the council to investigate fraud in the first place.

I have just watched over 6 minutes of pointless waffle from either an ill informed or deliberately disingenuous Conservative Councillor.

Housing Benefit is administered by Local Authorities on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions.

Local Authorities receive an administration grant from the DWP to cover the cost of administering benefits.

The Government have cut this grant by £154k.

  3. Shelley, so you think this is a Tory biased website? Are you having a laugh? There have been times on here when I would think the opposite is true. However, what really is true is that Your Thurrock reports on a wide selection of stories that are of interest to the people of Thurrock and, on the whole, it does a really good job of that. Don’t confuse Mike Casey and his posts with the responses that appear beneath them, Mike isn’t responsible for the views of all the readers that take the time to write in with a point of view. The respondents on YT hold a wide range of views and it is, in my opinion, the best forum for decent debate about Thurrock on the web.

On another point that you raise Shelley, Mike Casey is a professional, he knows what you can and can’t say on a public website like Your Thurrock. Have you ever heard the term slander? You might like to look it up. Mike Casey cannot and will not post slanderous comments about Public figures, something you seem to insist that he does. Before you make serious accusations against people you need proof and you certainly need to be damned sure you have your facts straight. You seem quite happy to make accusation after accusation (in extremely poorly written diatribes I might add) in the certain knowledge that every word you utter is a “known Fact” (sic) and everybody else is lying (although how an opinion can be a lie I will never know!)

Might I suggest you have a proper read of YT’s stories and the comments to them and observe the, by and large, reasoned arguments that are made. Compare the majority of comments to those that you make Shelley and you might get a clue as to why yours are (apparently) censored,

  4. Go to the Guardian and say something on there that doesn’t agree with their point of view and you will very quickly find yourself barred. There’s not a whole lot your thurrock can do but print stories about local politics and issues. It certainly get’s my day off to a more cheerful start after I’ve watched the Labour party broadcast on the BBC in the morning and I can vent my spleen here. Sets me up for the day.

  6. Robgate how an earth can you be taken seriously where’s the figures you waffle on with no sitistics please don’t try your propaganda on us

  7. How can you be taken seriously when you don’t proofread your comments?

    Answer – you’re not

  8. Paddy Power with your domestic record I can’t even see what you are doing in the job of councillor. I mean it is no recommendation that you work very coincidentally for a local bailiff no doubt touting work from the local council

  9. It’s still a general fund service and could probably be partially paid for by the HRA given it’s benefits to that account. I thought the HRA in Thurrock was awash with money. Given the high profile cases lately and the current state of the economy, this seems like more political games.

  10. HRA is ring fenced for expenditure of Council Housing and can’t be used to subsidise the Benefits Service administration. Benefits service administration and fraud detection is paid for by a specific grant from the DWP. Benefits administration isn’t paid for from the general fund.
