Football: Another defeat sees Thurrock hovering over drop zone

Ryman League Premier Division

Thurrock 1 v 2 Bognor Regis Town

By Bill Robinson

A BRIGHT and lively start by Thurrock looking to add another three points to their tally and could have taken the lead in the third minute when Danny Green broke away on the left flank and his shot went just wide of the far post.

Thurrock continued to pressurise the Bognor defence and broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when Darren Ebsworth fired over a cross from the left, Bognor defender Joshua Warren chested the ball down but running in was Ben Smith to fire home from close range.

Bognor came more into the game after the goal and went very close on 35 minutes when Terry Todd struck a fine shot from the edge of the penalty box and missed by inches.

Thurrock lost their momentum towards the end of the half and lost Darren Ebsworth with an injury just before the half time break

HT 1-0

Thurrock came out flying at the start of the second half and Danny Green came close to scoring on three occasions within the first few minutes, having one shot cleared off the line and two others saved.

Bognor were still looking for a winner as well and always looked likely to score.

They came close on 75 minutes when Terry Dodd broke through and was 1 on 1 with keeper Wil Viner only to see his shot saved with an outstretched leg.

Then in the 87th minute after the ball hit the referee Lewwis Spence was adjudged to have fouled Kane Wills, from the free kick keeper Viner made a fine fingertip save pushing the ball over for a corner.

The resulting corner was near to identical of the first goal except that this time Dan Thompsons near post flick on went straight into the back on the net.
