NATIONAL Walk to School Week starts on Monday (20 May) will sees all 40 infant junior and primary schools in Thurrock encouraging their pupils to walk and ride bikes to school.
Thurrock Council’s transport portfolio holder Cllr Andy Smith, said: “It’s well known that walking is key in fighting childhood obesity, but walking to school can be good for children in other ways; helping them learn vital road safety skills, interact with their local environment and developing independence for example.”
He said that Walk to School Week is aimed at encouraging more parents to leave their car at home when taking children to school, and Cllr Smith said: “Often parents say they don’t have the time to walk, but during Walk to School Week this year, our message is to give walking a go.
“Apart from the environmental and health benefits it’s a great opportunity for children to explore their local area and to meet new people.”
