Hockey: Last gasp agony for seconds

Thurrock 2nds 2 v 3 Romford 2nds

THIS was an important game in Division 5SE as both teams looked for their first points of the season. In the early stages it was Romford who dominated the game and forced Thurrock defence, led by Mark Mager, to work hard to repel the strong Romford attack.

Gradually Thurrock got into the game and moved play into the opposition half. After 20 minutes, Michael Fleming collected a ball from Alex Taylor and dribbled into the area before shooting. The keeper appeared to be behind the ball, however Jake Lamb nipped in to deflect the ball into the net for his first goal of the season. In the last minute before half time, Thurrock were awarded a short corner which Mark Mager received and slipped to Paul Mailey who hammered the ball past the keeper.

Romford started the game strongly and were awarded a free hit on the edge of the D which was quickly taken and allowed the Romford attacker to score from close range. Soon afterwards Ryan Jones was unlucky to see his shot deflected around the post after beating a series of defenders. A hit out by Thurrock was picked up by Josh Lamb who played a one-two with his brother Jay before driving into the area only to have his shot pushed around the post by the diving keeper.

From the hit out, Romford quickly moved the ball up the field and gained a short corner. Although Danny Hick saved the initial shot, the ball fell favourably to an attacker who slipped the ball inside the post to level the score. When Lawrence Jackson received a pass from Fleming he left several defenders in his wake before smashing the ball goal wards, however an outstretched keepers foot deflected it over the bar. In the final minute of the game a half hit shot by a Romford attacker evaded a Thurrock defender’s stick and was scrambled over the line to break Thurrock hearts.
