Awards night set for schools and teachers in Thurrock

AN AWARDS night for schools and teachers in Thurrock was announced on Wednesday (19 March) evening’s meeting of the council’s cabinet.

Council Leader and education portfolio holder, Cllr John Kent, was speaking about last year’s Education Commission report which had recommended celebrating schools’ successes and increasing pride in schools and the borough as a whole.

Cllr Kent said plans for the awards were taking shape. He said: “We have been talking closely with head teachers from all the borough’s schools and academies about how this should work and when it should happen.

“In this inaugural year the council will play a very important role in setting things up, but later the Education Alliance will lead.

“We are looking at holding the event on Friday, November 7, with around ten different categories such as Primary Teacher of the Year, Special Education Teacher, Early Years and so on – plus a Lifetime Achievement award.

“At least one of the awards will be open for local people to choose online so the whole community … all of Thurrock … can get involved.”

Cllr Kent also confirmed there would be a school governor related award.
