THURROCK Choral Society will be holding its Spring Concert on Saturday 26th April 2013 at Grays Parish Church at 7.30pm, when the programme will be ‘The Seasons’ by Joseph Haydn.
This work, for choir with three soloists, (soprano, tenor and bass) was originally written in both English and German, as Haydn had spent much of his time in London and the text is loosely based on a poem of the same name by Joseph Thomson, an English poet. Although the choir often sings in other languages, on this occasion it has decided to use the more popular of the two main English translations. The performance will also feature a narrator whose dramatic interpretation of the text will be interspersed amongst the musical items.
The oratorio has four distinct movements (as one might expect!) Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter – each season with a particular character of its own, with music that is both varied and tuneful. The work is not performed as often as Haydn’s other work, The Creation, but is considered by some critics to be more musically successful than its more famous forerunner. Sandra Wilkes, the TCS chairperson commented: ‘We have performed The Creation many times, but The Seasons is new to most of the choir and we are pleased to bring this lovely work to more prominent attention. Indeed, we were surprised how much we have enjoyed learning it!’.
The society always employs professionals of the highest calibre for its concerts and this time is no exception. The soloists and narrator are all experienced artistes working in London and beyond and will bring to the performance a high level of musical expertise. The society does not boast a large choir but is very ably led by their musical director Crispin Lewis and takes pride in preparing each of their concerts with a high degree of skill – and great enthusiasm! The evening promises to be a richly rewarding experience for participants and audience alike.
Tickets for the concert cost £8 and £7 for concessions – under 16s free – and can be obtained from the TCS Concert Secretary on 01375 377640 (or on the door). Further information about the society (including details of how to join) are available on the website: www.thurrockchoralsociety.org.uk
