Thurrock Council’s Counter Fraud and Investigation Service has led a complex investigation across the country, involving three police forces and four councils.
The operation – which led to a couple being arrested at an address in Blackpool, Lancashire this week – involved officers from the Metropolitan Police, Essex Police and Lancashire Police, along with staff from Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge and Blackpool councils.
Thurrock led the joint investigation into a husband and wife who are alleged to have defrauded four local authorities and the DWP of £370,000.
The fraud relates to an attack on the social care system at Thurrock Council, the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, and Redbridge as well as Blackpool Council where false representations were allegedly made.
In addition to the social care fraud the representations made to the DWP are also suspected to be false.
As a result of a detailed and extensive enquiry the pair were arrested at their home in Blackpool where their property was searched by investigators and police. The couple’s other properties in London and Essex were also searched.
The pair – a 47-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man – were interviewed concerning the offences and were released pending further enquiries.
