FOUR hardworking first year students fought off hundreds of applicants across the UK to secure places onto the prestigious University of Reading Scholars programme.
A-level students Carla Briggs, Amy Oliver, Alex Shears and Bradley Burge recently received letters from the university confirming their places onto the year-long Scholars Programme.
The programme gives a real taste of life as a university undergraduate and provides practical support from leading academics, current undergraduates. Students are also assigned an e-mentor for help and advice.
The students chose which subject area they wished to partake in – Carla chose Biology as she plans a career in this field and Amy, Bradley and Alex selected the Languages programme.
Mark Vinall, Principal of Palmer’s College said: "This is a great achievement and a wonderful opportunity for our brilliant students".
The programme kicks off with a series of introductory sessions in December and across the year the students will be invited to attend master-classes, undergraduate shadowing opportunities, a study skills session and a two-day summer school at the University’s Whiteknights campus in Reading.
Ex-William Edwards student, Carla Briggs said: “We are all really happy to be accepted and are really excited in starting the programme. I’m so glad that my Biology teacher told me about this opportunity.”
