LABOUR Parliamentary Candidate, Mike Le-Surf, pledges to fight the unfair Bedroom Tax affecting hundreds of families in South Basildon and East Thurrock.

On April 1st 2013 David Cameron’s Tories, with Liberal Democrat support, introduced the cruel and unfair Bedroom Tax which has hit half a million households and 771,000 people. Two thirds of the households affected include a person with a disability and the tax also hits 60,000 carers.

A person can be caught in the Bedroom Tax net if their children leave home, someone dies or their income falls. More people will pay in the future.

Mike Le-Surf said: “The Tories and Lib Dems Bedroom Tax will cost people £4,200 in South Basildon and East Thurrock if the Tories win again. At the moment, 740 people are paying, but as many again could be hit if this disgraceful tax continues. Labour has pledged to abolish the Bedroom Tax and only a Labour government will do this.”

Rachel Reeves, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, said: “771,000 people have been hit by the cruel Bedroom Tax, forcing many into debt and to rely on food banks. And five more years of David Cameron means another five years of the Bedroom Tax hitting a million more people. The first thing I will do as Labour Secretary of State for Work and Pensions is get rid of the cruel and unfair Bedroom Tax.”
