Labour campaigner spearheads protest in Victoria Road in Stanford le-Hope

ELLA Vine, Labour’s candidate in local election for Stanford le Hope West will lead a residents’ protest event against the building of houses on a flood risk area at the rear of Victoria Road in Stanford le Hope.

The event will take place on Saturday, 11th April at 11 am beside the roundabout on the top of Victoria Road, by Manorway.

The issue of potential house building has been on-going since 2011, when this land was taken out of greenbelt protection with the view to build on it. The main concern of residents of the immediate area is that the land is a flood plain.

Ella said: ‘’The vast majority of residents strongly oppose house-building on this land. It already floods regularly – I have received photographs from residents of a flooded car park in Bell Reeves Close and forwarded it, together with a petition, signed by residents to the planning committee. Additionally, the only access to the new site would be via one roundabout, which raises concerns about traffic, capacity and the safety of the proposed narrow access road, for example, if an emergency vehicles requires access it would be difficult if cars were parked on this narrow road.

“Our resistance has been partly successful in that the planning application has been deferred by the planning committee and the developer has taken our arguments into account and is redesigning the planning application. It shows that the planning committee members listen when arguments are put directly to them in an effective way and we will continue to apply that pressure until the decision makers realise that this is not suitable land to be built on.

“For this reason I am organising the residents’ protest when residents will be able together and send a direct message to the decision makers. I hope that the will of residents will be respected and honoured and common sense will prevail. If you are resident of Stanford and oppose the development on a flood plain please come to the protest event – we need to show our will to the planners in large numbers’’.
