Ward by Ward: Chafford and North Stifford.

THERE has not been a local election in this ward for three years. In 2012, the Conservatives won by 174 votes. Not a massive total but comfortable enough.

This should be solid Conservative territory and you would have thought that the residents of Chafford are very much the type of people who may well want to give the Tories in Westminster, five more year "to finish the job".

Then again, that might be a massive assumption.

On a local level, many will have their eyes peeled on whether or not a new secondary school can be delivered. With the Harris Federation having been set a date of August, the clock is certainly ticking. The fact that the school could be in Purfleet, might raise a few questions as well. Or not.

We would just like to pay tribute to Simon Wootton, who stood down from this ward last month. Mr Wootton was everything you would hope for in a Conservative councillor. The quintessential bastion of society, who had class, standards, charm and integrity.

The Labour candidate, Michael Bullion, is one of a number of Labour candidates, who is in it for the long haul and although he may not get in, is determined to stick with it and try to make a difference.

It will be interesting to see how many votes UKIP get in Chafford. Possibly more than the 152 they received in 2012.

Prediction: Cons hold

Chafford & North Stifford

BULLION Michael, Labour

COXSHALL Mark, Conservative
