VOLUNTEERS’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK – and it’s taking place from the 1-7 June 2015.

Volunteers are central to the work of many charities and organisations, and have a valuable presence in many communities. Volunteers’ Week is the perfect opportunity to recognise volunteers who put their time, energy and enthusiasm into helping others, whether it’s clearing out a local park, or helping with a reading club or food bank, volunteers are the social glue keeping our communities together.

Laura Hudson, volunteer coordinator for Volunteer Centre Thurrock said “There are many people who may be considering volunteering but would like to know more about the opportunities available to them.

We will be out and about in volunteers week and will be at the South Ockendon Centre (Belhus Library) on Tuesday 2nd June between 9.30am and 12pm, Acorns Community Hub at Headon hall, Stifford Clays on Wednesday 3rd June 10am-12pm and Chadwell St Mary Centre (Chadwell Library) on Thursday 5th June 10am-12.30pm.

We hope people will pop down to see us to talk about volunteering over a cup of tea and some cake and there will also be information available about the new

Timebanking project and young people’s volunteer project, aswell as information on summer event volunteering such as Village Beach and Thurrock 100 taking.

Volunteers week is a great time to begin volunteering and to use your spare time to help others”.

Volunteering is a way to give something back, but it’s also an opportunity to benefit from new experiences, make friends, gain skills and have fun. There has been a rise in recent years in flexible volunteering, so that even people without the time to commit to a regular activity can get involved.

“It is important that local organisations and groups who use volunteers recognise the valuable contribution they are making and ensure they say a big thank you to them.

They could award their volunteers with certificates, buy lunch or even take their volunteers out”.

Everyone is invited to join in this national celebration of volunteers and volunteering, and volunteers are being encouraged to share their own stories and motivations on social media using the hashtag #ivolunteer.
