Thurrock Council leader announces new cabinet

ANNOUNCING his new cabinet for the coming year, Council Leader Cllr John Kent paid tribute to his deputy, Cllr Barbara Rice.

He was speaking at Wednesday (27 May) evening’s annual meeting of the council.

Cllr Kent said: “I would like to pay tribute to Barbara who has been an absolutely steadfast Deputy Leader of the Council.

“Much of what she does goes unseen and unnoticed – supporting me, supporting all of the cabinet and driving forward our Public Health agenda.

“I’m just conscious that I don’t often enough take time to say thank you properly to Barbara so I’d like to put that right tonight Barbara, thank you.”

Cllr Kent also thanked opposition leaders Cllr Rob Gledhill and Cllr Graham Snell for the way they had worked with him in the lead up to Wednesday’s meeting.

He said: “When you have a council as balanced as this is politically, there is capacity for meetings like this to descend into a little more than farce.

“I think it is a sign of the growing maturity within Thurrock Council that we have avoided that tonight and think it bodes very well for the year ahead.”

The cabinet for the coming year is: Leader, finance and education, Cllr John Kent; deputy leader, adult social care and health, Cllr Barbara Rice; housing, Cllr Lynn Worrall; regeneration, Cllr Richard Speight; central services, Cllr Victoria Holloway; children’s services, Cllr Bukky Okunade, highways and transport, Cllr Oliver Gerrish; environment, Cllr Gerard Rice; and communities and public protection, Cllr Terry Brooks.
