A COLLAPSED surface water culvert on Lower Dunton Road has forced the road to be closed until it can be made safe.
The culvert spans the carriageway and initial investigations show a void undermines the road over a significant area and further excavation and investigations are continuing.
The culvert will have to be reconstructed across the full width of the carriageway and this will also require a curing period for the protective concrete slab before to resurfacing of the carriageway can be carried out.
The damaged road is north of Doesgate Lane and Lower Dunton Road has been closed for approximately 200 metres.
The council has spoken with local businesses – including the Langdon Hills Visitor Centre – and they are aware of the situation which may disrupt business for a while although there are no accesses to properties within the closed section of road.
However, residents and visiting vehicles will need to follow a diversion which will run via Doesgate Lane, the A128, the A127, West Mayne, Lower Dunton Road and vice versa.
The latest information suggests the closure will have to remain in place until approximately 18 June, however some processes of the works are weather dependent.
