A THURROCK primary school is well on the way back to being rated as good by Ofsted, according to inspectors.

East Tilbury Primary School in Princess Margaret Road, was marked as “requires improvement” last year, but in its second monitoring report inspector Tim Bristow found senior leaders and governors are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement.

The school is part of the St Clere’s Co-operative Academy Trust.

In his letter to new head Mrs Louise Coates, Mr Bristow said: “You and the other senior leaders have been very effective in strengthening teaching and achievement.

“The progress of children in the Early Years Foundation Stage, as well as of the pupils in both Key Stages 1 and 2, is rapid.

“School assessment information indicates that achievement for all year groups is much stronger than at the time of the last inspection.”

He added: “You have identified that more can be done to strengthen achievement in writing and for the more able: the interventions for pupils, curriculum innovations and training for teachers are ensuring that these issues are being tackled successfully.”

Thurrock Council leader and education portfolio holder, Cllr John Kent, said: “Mr Bristow’s comments make it perfectly clear East Tilbury Primary is on the right track. Mrs Coates, the staff, the governors and the children deserve a great deal of credit for the work that has been done in the past year or so.

“They have identified exactly what needs to be done to be really effective and started moving in the right direction. What is more, he makes it plain they know what needs to be done and have a plan for doing it.

“Once again we see a Thurrock school recovering quickly.”
