THURROCK Council has spent millions on local schools over the past year or so and plans to keep spending.
Council Leader and education portfolio holder Cllr John Kent, speaking on last year’s spending at Wednesday (10 June) evening’s cabinet meeting, said: “As you’ll all know, education is a particular passion of mine and part of this report gives me great pleasure as it details the work we have funded in schools over the past year – and the amount invested – and the work we’re still doing in schools.
“We completed the new nursery block and four new classrooms at Graham James Primary, spending nearly £3 million; £3½ million was invested at Little Thurrock Primary for classrooms and facilities; and much the same was done at Bonnygate Primary, for just over £1 million.”
He added: “I’m also happy to report that three temporary buildings were removed from Quarry Hill and replaced with four permanent classrooms.”
Cllr Kent also looked ahead to spending in the current financial year, saying: “Work also started in other schools last year and is continuing this year; they include amalgamation work at Tilbury Manor; and Arthur Bugler; expansion work at Purfleet; and the building of a new primary school (with the Harris Foundation) in South Stifford.
“I really do believe that creating the best possible learning environment for our young people is an integral part of our agreed aim to create a great place for learning and opportunity and I am proud that we are continuing to make real progress toward that aim.”
