A NEW safety system with the power to stop and turn around potentially dangerous vehicles has been brought in on the Dartford Crossing.
Under the new system oversized lorries and hazardous loads travelling northbound from Kent to Essex will be turned around before they enter the tunnels.
The large vehicles will then be directed into a separate lane where they will be met by an escort and escorted through the tunnel.
Drivers who fail to follow the new system and the correct lanes could receive fines or points on their licence.
Dart Charge project director Nigel Gray said: "Since Dart Charge launched in November it has already significantly improved journeys at the Dartford Crossing.
"This new safety system is vital for the safe operation of the tunnels and will enable us to remove the old payment barriers for good.
"It will mean a significant change to the road layout, so I advise drivers to take extra care and pay extra attention to all signs and signals, especially for the first few times they use the crossing following the change."
