AN event on the 10th August will kick start a drive to make a difference to at least 1000 people as a result of stronger community connections in Thurrock.

The event will be held at the Culver Centre in South Ockendon and is hosted by Stronger Together.

Kristina Jackson, Thurrock CVS Chief Executive explains: ‘The idea came from the positive results of our Community Builder projects across Thurrock. We realised that speaking to people about  what concerns them, what they would like to be involved with and what they care about leads to the most amazing positive outcomes – everyone benefits. We are starting to see more groups of people getting together – to garden, sew, knit, walk or just meet for a coffee. As a result, individuals have found new friendships and new interests as well as practical support, making a real difference to their lives. So the idea is to release all the energy that is out there in our communities and which, if put to good use, will make Thurrock a better, more neighbourly place to live’.Â

The event on 10 August will describe the positive stories emerging from the work of the Community Builders so far and explain our plans to extend the project, with an initial aim of creating 1000 positive community outcomes.  It is hoped that 25 people who either live or work in communities across Thurrock will come forward to become allies of the Stronger Together Partnership and champion this ambitious project.

‘This event is for anyone working or living in Thurrock, if you would like to meet up with like-minded people who are passionate about making a difference in their community then this event provides a great opportunity. You can also find out more about other Asset Based Community Development initiatives with representatives from projects including Timebanking, Community Hubs and Local Area Coordination.’ said Natalie Warren, Thurrock Council Community Development & Equalities Manager.

The initiative is part of the Stronger Together programme – a partnership between the voluntary sector and Thurrock Council. The programme supports activities that strengthen communities by creating better connections between people.   This event also offers the opportunity to enhance skills through the partnerships support and guidance.
