A ROUTINE check by officers in Chadwell St. Mary turned out to be a bad day for one man, who was found to be driving while banned.

Special Constable (Sc) Paul Lush from the Casualty Reduction Section, was on patrol with police staff member Matt Hine when a driver in a Ford Puma, upon seeing the officers, began to drive erratically.

They decided to follow the car and then carried out an area search when they lost sight of it. They then came across a 35-year-old year old man, who they believed to be the driver of the car and Sc Lush carried out a routine stop check.

The man, later identified as Wayne Windsor, of Fulbrook Lane, South Ockendon was found to have two keys believing to be for a Ford Puma in his possession. When questioned by the officers, Windsor stated he didn’t know where the keys came from.

A short distance nearby, the Puma was found. Checks showed that the car had no MOT, no insurance, and a bald tyre.

Sc Lush then established that Windsor was a disqualified driver and he was duly arrested. When he reached custody, a further search found that he was also in possession of Class B drugs.

Windsor was charged with driving whilst disqualified, having no insurance, as well as for drugs possession and then remanded.

Windsor subsequently appeared in court and was sentenced to just over four months in prison. He has also been disqualified from driving for a further 18 months.

Matt Hine said: "Essex Police are committed to keeping the roads of Essex safe, and work to ensure that those who commit motoring offences are off the road.

"We will continue to robustly deal with such drivers who continue to drive despite being banned.”
